Satyananda Stokes (16 August 1882 – 14 May 1946)

The  name   also  pay  Homage  to  Late  Mr.  Semual  Stokes  an  American  Resident  of  Philadelphia who  was  a  socialist . He  was  the  one  who   blessed  Himachal  with  the   Apple Plantation   which  today  is  the  main  crop practiced  by the  people here. It  is  just  because  of  him Himachal  is  known  as  the  fruit  state in  the  whole  world .

Mr. Stokes was not only a social worker but also a great educationalist.He was of the firm opinion that without education a nation cannot progress.

Born on 16th Aug., 1822 in German town, Philadelphia and died on 14th May, 1946 at Shimla is the long and cherished history of a great man who left behind the riches of Philadelphia and adopted Kotgarh as his home and transformed the entire economy of the hill states of India, Bhutan and Nepal. Stokes had always had a strong sense of social justice and later became active in India’s freedom struggle for independence from Great Britain.
